Here is a fact that should be more famous than it is. You almost certainly have an overbite, your upper front teeth closing just ahead of your lower ones, and there is a decent chance you owe it to the fork. For most of human history people did not have overbites. They had an edge-to-edge bite, top teeth meeting bottom teeth like a pair of pliers, because that is the bite you need to eat the way humans ate for a few hundred thousand years: you clamp a piece of food between your front teeth and cut or tear off a mouthful with a knife or a hand. The anthropologist C. Loring Brace traced the modern European overbite to a startlingly recent date, around the eighteenth century, and pinned it on the table knife and fork. Once cutlery did the cutting, and food arrived at the mouth already in small pieces, the front teeth stopped clamping, and over a few generations the bite drifted into the overlap we now consider simply the shape of a human mouth. The same change shows up in China centuries earlier, tied to the same cause arriving earlier there, chopsticks and a kitchen that cut food small before it reached the table. The hypothesis is debated, as the good ones are. But sit with the possibility: a piece of cutlery reached into the human skull and rearranged it.
I lead with that because it is the most literal answer I know to the question everyone is asking about artificial intelligence, which is some version of: will this thing make me obsolete? Will it hollow me out, wither the part of me that used to do the work? The fork is the oldest case study available, and its answer is stranger and more reassuring than either the boosters or the doomers will tell you. Yes, the tool changed us, right down to the bone. And no, it did not make our hands fall off.
A tool is an extension of you
Marshall McLuhan spent a career on a single idea: a technology is an extension of a human faculty. The wheel extends the foot. The book extends the eye. Clothing extends the skin. The fork extends the hand, and specifically the ancient, animal act of carrying food to the mouth. And electric media, McLuhan wrote back in the 1960s, extend the nervous system itself, which makes artificial intelligence the latest and most on-the-nose extension of the faculty he was already pointing at: thought. Seen this way, AI is not an alien arriving to compete with us. It is the newest limb in a line that runs through the plow and the printing press and the pocket calculator, each one an external organ we grew on purpose because the internal one had a limit.
The fear is older than the fork
The fear that the new limb will kill the old one is just as old, and it has never once been original. In Plato’s Phaedrus, written around 370 BCE, Socrates tells a story about the invention of writing. The god Theuth presents it to the Egyptian king Thamus as a gift that will make people wiser and sharpen their memory. Thamus refuses to be charmed. Writing, he says, will do the opposite: it will breed forgetfulness, because people will trust the external marks instead of their own recollection; it is a recipe for reminding, not for remembering, and it will produce people who seem to know a great deal while actually knowing nothing. Read that twice and change three words and it is a keynote about ChatGPT. It is the exact anxiety, twenty-four centuries early, aimed at the most fundamental thought-technology there is, the written word. And here is the part to hold onto: Thamus was not entirely wrong. Literate cultures did lose the towering feats of oral memory that came before them. And no human being who has ever lived would hand writing back to get that memory returned. The panic was real, partly correct, and completely beside the point.
Every extension is also an amputation
I want to be fair to the fear, because the strong version of this argument earns its keep by taking the fear seriously rather than waving it off. McLuhan himself said that every extension is also an amputation: the faculty you externalize, you also numb. He was not being cute. Offload a skill and that specific skill really does soften. People who navigate everywhere by turn-by-turn directions show measurably less of the internal spatial map that people who read paper maps keep sharp. Mental arithmetic thinned across a single generation of calculators. So when someone worries that letting a machine do their writing or their reasoning will dull their writing or their reasoning, they are not imagining it. That particular muscle can, in fact, go slack.
But a hand is not the one thing it happens to be doing
The mistake, the whole mistake, is one of scale. The fear takes a single narrow function that a tool has externalized and quietly swaps it for the entire organ. The fork took over one maneuver, the delivery of a bite of food, and yes, that had consequences: our teeth rearranged themselves around the loss. But nobody’s hands withered, because carrying food to the mouth is not what a hand is. A hand also threads a needle, plays a cello, sets a bone, signs a name, cups a face, throws a curveball, and, incidentally, holds the fork, because the fork never replaced the hand, it recruited it. The overbite is the perfect emblem of what actually happens when we extend ourselves: the freed faculty does not vanish, it redeploys, and it sometimes leaves a physical trace of the reallocation. The teeth changed because the mouth found other uses for the pressure. The hand did not shrink. It went off and did the other ten thousand things a hand is for.
Work is a very small part of a mind
Now run the same subtraction on the brain, and the arithmetic gets almost embarrassing for the doom. The fear says AI will automate the work, and it may automate a great deal of it, the drafting, the routing, the filtering, the summarizing, the tasks that were always closer to the fork’s one maneuver than we liked to admit. But notice the buried assumption: that the bundle of things we currently get paid to do is the same thing as what a human mind is. It is not remotely. Work as we know it, this specific, recent, historically accidental package of tasks, is to human cognition roughly what carrying-food-to-the-mouth is to the hand. It is one function. A mind also judges, forgives, plays, decides what matters, reads a room, holds a grudge and then lets it go, makes meaning out of noise, weighs what is fair, changes itself, and knows when the person across the table is lying. Automate the entire present definition of work and you will have taken over the mind’s one maneuver and left the other fifty million untouched, most of which were never for sale in the first place, and most of which are about to matter more, not less, precisely because the automatable part is finally being carried by something else.
The fork is the model
So this is why I keep returning to the fork, well past the point where my friends find it funny. It is the cleanest working model of technology we have, because it is finished. The controversy is over, the skull has been reshaped, the verdict is in, and we can see the entire arc that AI is only partway through. A new extension arrives. It draws the ancient fear that it will replace the faculty it extends. The fear turns out to be aimed at a single function rather than the whole organ. The function gets handed off. The faculty redeploys to everything else it was always capable of. And two hundred years later the thing once condemned as decadent and dangerous is sitting quietly on the table, so ordinary that we have forgotten it was ever an invention, or that it rearranged our faces. The fork did not make your hands obsolete. It freed them. That is what a good technology does, and it is the only useful thing the fork has to say about the machine now reaching for your thoughts. It is not here to end you. It is here, if you insist on being afraid at all, to give your mind its overbite, and then to let you find out what else your mind is for.
